Aaron James Aldum Sr. was a child of the settler Aaron Aldum. According to notes by A.E. Makin, he "was a partner in the firm of Aldum & Harvey, first located in Queen Street and later in Bathurst Street. The firm published under government contract the Eastern Districts Government Gazette from July 1838 to September 1841. He saw service in the frontier war of 1850-53 and was slightly wounded in a severe skirmish with Hottentot rebels on the Katberg Pass while in command of a party of Whittlesea men." He lived much of his life in the Transkei. He and Clementine had 7 or 8 children. A form returned to A.E. Makin (see his notes, vol. 1) mentions that Aaron James Aldum lived near Tsomo. This may be a clue to finding where "Mountainvale, Main" is located.

Note that A.E. Makin's notes refer to only three children: Aaron James b. 1838, Vivian Margaret b. 1838, and Susannah Henrietta b. 1847.
