Zerub (later Thomas) Baillie

Zerub Baillie e is mentioned in the 1881 Census as being a boy of 12, working as a "page (dom. in service)". (Since Zerub Baillie Jr (1) died, the name was re-used.) The Baillie family was residing at 11 Cornwell Street, Bishopwearmouth, at the time of the 1881 Census.

According to family memories, Zerub Baillie ran away from home as a boy. Also according to family memories, Zerub’s father was a shopkeeper and owned a hardware store. Zerub Jr. met Sir Abe Bailey on the mines in Johannesburg or Kimberley. As he did not like mining, Abe suggested that he go to Queenstown and work for his father, Thomas Bailey, who owned a hardware store there. Zerub did this, changed his name to Thomas and eventually took over the business. Zerub/Thomas Baillie was a Springbok bowler in 1926. (The date may be in error, as he would then have been 57.)

Proof that this Zerub/Thomas Baillie is indeed related to John Baillie (missionary), and to Zerub Baillie and Jane Anderson: There are several items of evidence. (a) The (Queenstown Baillie) family memories of Zerub/Thomas’ descendants about his birth in Sunderland. (b) The (Queenstown Baillie) family memories that his name was Zerubbabel, later changed to Thomas. (c) A scrap of paper on which "mom" (Euphemia Beverley Baillie) had jotted down these details: "Walter Baillie died in Ladysmith, wife Aunt Annie. Alex. went to Australia. William Baillie in London, son John’s wife Agnes came to SA on a visit. John Baillie lived in Pretoria and had 3 children was a missionary in Mbabane, Swaziland. Kathleen, Francis and Robert."
